Aloha. My name is Keola Birano and I’m a father of five beautiful children. Around 20 years ago my life changed after a psychological breakdown that led to multiple attempts at suicide. Through my spiritual beliefs, therapy and self reflection I’ve come to learn more about myself and what it takes to live life fully. By overcoming my psychological hurdles I’ve been able to take control of my story. I’m no longer living the role that was given to me and instead I’ve decided to chart a new course. A path that I hope will inspire others to pursue their passions and not let themselves be a passenger in life.
What have I done since taking control? I’m a doctoral student at Washington State University majoring in Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education. I know, it’s a mouthful. I’m currently writing a young adult novel focused on weaving together Hawaiian culture, history and mythology. This book will be an accumulation of the things I’ve learned, which I hope to impart in an entertaining format. Hope you join me on this journey of self-actualization and hope.
